Ongar HIgh Street development

Currently under construction, Rees Architects achieved planning permission for this 2/3 storey, four unit block of flats located within the Chipping Ongar Conservation Area, adjacent to the Grade II listed building, and within the settings of the Grade II listed estate.

The site is accessed via a curved entrance road off Epping High Road, which is part of an informal square made up of three listed buildings. The site was formally a small scrap of land used for parking & storage and forms the northern edge of the site.

The new building respects the height, scale and materiality of the adjacent listed building, and follows the form of the surrounding buildings, fronting onto the square/road and creating a sense of place. Landscaping to the front and the careful selection of materials will help soften the appearance of the building into its surroundings.

The design of the building takes advantage of the natural slopping site, where a half basement is formed from a concrete box to allow storage for each flat. The ground floor is then formed from traditional brickwork, allowing a cantilevering timber frame structure to sit on top, forming the first floor and open trussed roof. See illustration to the right.

The construction is due to be completed mid 2019, and will provide exempla apartments for the area.
