OUR ETHOS

We believe that collaboration is key to successful design, so we include you in every step of our process. Not only do we build on your brief with our collective knowledge and experience, but our aim is to enhance.

The result? The realisation of your vision with a little extra; extra space, extra light, extra refinement.

  • NATURAL MATERIALS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Natural materials give depth and tactility to furniture, the space as a whole, and the building itself: from the small details to the complete vision. By designing with respect for the inherent integrity of materials, they become timeless and improve with age. We choose our materials carefully for a unique finish whether that’s from crafting something that’s not ‘off the shelf’ or sourcing unusual paint colours, even mixing our own to get exactly the right look and feel.

  • LIGHT, ACOUSTICS, WARMTH, TACTILITY

We strive to make comfortable spaces, balancing the senses so that sight, sound, and touch are all satisfyingly attuned with the space. From strategic lighting that combines natural daylight with artificial, acoustics that work harmoniously with floor materials or high ceilings, to interesting textures that sit side by side and please the eye. All of these elements work together to bring a multi-sensorial warmth and atmosphere that is not just the sum of its parts.

INTERCONNECTION OF SPACES

The dynamics of a space can be palpable when you walk through the door. From taking down an internal wall to softening a partition or using sliding doors, we make sure that everything just flows. We know how to bring interconnectedness to a space while also introducing the possibility of finding a comfortable nook of privacy. By playing with proportions a room can expand or contract accordingly.

  • SYNERGY AND SENSIBILITIES OF DIFFERENT ELEMENTS

From structure to soft furnishings, we don’t just look at a building’s functionality because a home is a living, breathing space. As well as looking great, materials should be fit for purpose, resilient, timeless and get better with age. These foundational properties bring cohesion across different elements.

  • PROPOSITIONS, ALIGNMENTS AND JUXTAPOSITION

No space is too small to be an architectural talking point. Architectural lines create a seamlessness and consistency that bring a sense of natural order to a space. When this structure is in place, there’s room to have some creative fun with features and add intrigue with subtle juxtaposition or dramatic contrast.

VIEWS AND VISTAS

Open plan views and glimpses of what is beyond can have an effect on how you use a space and how you feel within it. We look at perspectives and vistas from the front of the building through to the back to take advantage of where a clear line of sight can be utilised to draw the eye and focus the mind. Views through to a garden, cosy window seats or expansive arches all open up the horizon literally and metaphorically. Creating a partial view of a space invites you to take a closer look, inspiring the imagination and adding drama to a building.

  • SUSTAINABILITY

The embodied energy of materials can be one of the biggest factors contributing to CO² emissions in a building’s lifecycle. We look at the existing structure, what is already available on site and what can be repurposed or salvaged. Our technical knowledge of using and sourcing materials supports our aim to be as sustainable as possible in all aspects of our work. We always consider the life cycle of the material we use, its durability and how environmentally friendly it is.

  • VERNACULAR OF MATERIALS AND DESIGN FEATURES

The vernacular of local materials, and the way they are used can have a strong effect on a building and the neighbouring area. The consideration of why and how materials are used and not just a copy-and-paste exercise establishes unique points of interest to the overall design. We like to experiment with materials to see how these can be used in new modern ways while respecting and maintaining heritage.
